I’ve joined Tumblr – markleggett.tumblr.com/.
Seems like a good place to put weird doodles and stuff. Never fear, I’ll still be in the usual places like WordPress and Flickr as well.

Harry Potter cupcakes
My gal pal Danelle and I made twelve Harry Potter themed cupcakes as a birthday cake for my son Jonathan, who just turned twelve. He is just obsessed with everything Harry Potter at the moment, from reading all the books and watching all the films, to making his own wand out of a stick from a tree outside our house. If it’s not about magic spells or wizards, he’s not interested. I never really got into it all, but with two people in my house loving all things Harry Potter, I’ve finally come around to it all after watching “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (I love you Gary Oldman).
Jonathan loved his cupcakes, and choosing who got to eat which character. I’m fairly pleased with how they turned out, there wasn’t much planning in terms of how I would draw each character. Danelle made the cupcakes and the icing mix, and I did the character designs and the icing. My hands were all shaky and nervous for the first few, but after a while I loosened up. Some of the finished characters are easier to pick out than others. I’m sure if I planned it better each would have been more distinct, but we only really had the night before his birthday to get them done.
I’d never heard of the cupcake blog Cupcakes Take The Cake before, but Danelle had and she was geeking out pretty hard when they did a blog post about them – http://cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com/2010/12/harry-potter-cupcakes.html
Thanks CTTC!
Garfield

(Click here to view it larger)
My son and I drew some silly comic strips for fun, here’s mine. I loved Garfield as a kid, much like my son does now. I always wanted to be just like creator Jim Davis, until the day I discovered he didn’t always write or draw Garfield strips, but instead handing those responsibilities to a team of writers and artists. I was pretty gutted. It seems like he’s the polar opposite of Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson, who hasn’t commercialised his properties beyond the actual strips. Regardless, I spent many hours drawing my own Garfield cartoons throughout my childhood, helping me on my way to becoming an illustrator.
Mural Illustration
My son’s school is planning a mural, so I made this illustration for them based on all of the ideas the children had. I’m leaving the colour choices up to the kids, and left certain things blank like the girl’s book titles and the boy’s painting so they can put their own ideas in there too. I’m really interested to see what they do with it!
Box Robot!
Danelle and I went into my work so I could use the computer and steal their internet, so before we left we made a giant robot out of boxes. It seemed like the mature thing to do at the time. I named him “Gavin” because I always name everything Gavin.
We took a photo with humans in it to show the scale of the robot. We are normal human size.
When Jeff came in to work the next day and found the robot, he gave him a tie. I like to think that Gavin is dressed up for a funeral.
